Habitat: forests, thickets, mountain slopes; prefers well-drained loamy soil, rich in organic matter, in sun or semi-shade; woodland; dappled shade; medium, loamy, heavy, clay, moist, well-drained soils; semi-shade or no shade.
Content: aristolochic acid.
Use: medicinal, in Chinese markets.
BotanyHerb; climbing; perennial; to 1 m tall.
Stem: more or less woody; scramble over the ground, twining into surrounding vegetation for support.
Flower: hermaphrodite; malodorous; flowers from April to May.
Pollination: by small flies.
