Aurum carbonicum

Year 2022, Issue 29CaseAuthor: Deborah Collins
A case of inner child
Mr. R. came for severe depression since two years, for which he was on medication to no avail. “I dread the day; I don’t even want to get out of bed. I know that it all has to do with my childhood, but I can’t get over it.” His father died when he was young, and his mother remarried to a man who took over the family farm but was terribly unkind to his step-son. The young boy was forced to work hard on the farm both before and after school, and was kicked if he was not working. He was not allowed into the house before dark, and would sit outside with his dog, afraid that his step-father would come out and yell at him or beat him. He vowed at age ten to run away from home when he could look after himself, and although he was not paid for his work on the farm, he managed to save a bit of money from odd jobs elsewhere; just before he was 16 he secretly left home, telling no one where he was. He took on three different jobs, working day and night to provide for himself, until he found himself a job where he eventually worked himself up from nothing, and became very wealthy, with a thriving business and 45 employees. Despite his financial resources he was unable to relax, always thinking that he had to work harder for fear that his finances would collapse. Finally he became morose and barely able to speak. It seemed to be a clear case of Aurum metallicum: depression in an overly responsible workaholic manager who has already reached the top, and but feels that he cannot maintain it. Aurum brought some relief, but not enough to be satisfactory. On going back to his childhood, the key seemed to be with the loss of his father, and the subsequent mistreatment by his step-father. It appeared that the Aurum aspect was a compensation for a much “younger” part, as though a responsible, hard-working aspect had stepped in to protect the vulnerable child who felt abandoned by his father and left in the hands of a tyrant. Carbon corresponded with the loss of the father, and with the fact that his sense of security had been constantly undermined by his step-father. It also suited his stout build and rounded features. Four weeks after a dose of Aurumcarbonicum 200C I saw a transformed man in front of me. He was bright and sparkling, beaming with good cheer and enthusiasm. “Now I can hardly wait to get up and get to work, seeing people and talking with them. They all like being with me now, it feels like I cheer them up. Everything looks beautiful, the people, the animals, nature, everything shines. Everyone notices how I’ve changed, and I want to tell the whole world how good I feel. I wish everyone could feel this good!” Four years later he is still doing well, and sending all and sundry to homeopathy.
