16.1 Ytterbium metallicum
They give you the feeling that they've stepped out of life. They don't belong to the normal world of connections and work. Their life story induces the question "Why haven't they done more with their life, why haven't they done more with their obvious talents?". They stand outside of society and they want to have it that way. For them the world is nice to philosophize about, but not to live in with all its hectic nature and obligations. They prefer a mediocre live in the sense of worldly achievements, over a life where they have to surrender themselves.

Outsider to be free
They place themselves out of the normal order and out of society. They do this in order to be free to follow their own pursuits and goals. They take the position of outcast in order to be free. If they don’t belong to the group, no one can force them to do anything.
Outcast because of his independence
They have the feeling that they are an outcast because they are so strange, independent and autonomous. They feel different and misunderstood, but have no inclination to change that. They prefer to stay apart and let things pass them by. If others don't understand them then that's their problem. They can become closed in order to feel free. They feel good with not being understood because then no one can claim them. They are too independent and unregulated to be accepted or asked into normal society.
Asking in freedom
They still expect to get what they need from society. Sometimes they conform to an extent to get their needs fulfilled. They can also be too lazy to do much to fulfill their desires. But mostly they don’t accept any norms and values from others. They prefer to be autonomous but lazy. They can become so lazy, that they neglect the world around them. This can lead to a situation where they aren't independent anymore. Then they feel autonomous internally and withdraw into their inner world to retain their autonomy.
Philosophizing about the inner world.
They tend to philosophize about the world and the powers that are there. They can look from a distance to find the deep meaning of everything. In later stages this philosophizing goes more to the inner world. They reflect long about the powers of the soul and the motives of the psyche.
Lazy therapist
They can also become therapists. But in this too they look at things from a distance. It's a kind of remote interest, without having any inclination to become involved. It is a kind of interested but distant looking-on. They can seem like rather a lazy therapist.
Autonomy
They keep their autonomy by standing aside, not being really connected. They can take a position in society that's not demanding or the position of an outcast. They can live on slender resources in order to keep their philosophical independence.
Shadow
They have experienced the shadow and now feel that they are past it. There's not much they can do against it anymore. Or they feel that there is no need to do anything about it, as it's just part of nature. It's a kind of attitude of "don't worry, be happy".
Power
Ytterbium feels like an outsider who doesn't need to exert any power. It has no use, he feels it is in vain.
