Region: western North America.
Habitat: rocky soils; moist conditions forests; occasionally in boggy land, redwood, mixed evergreen , yellow pine forests; prefers light, sandy, loamy and heavy clay soils; grows in semi-shade or no shade; altitude: sea level to 1500 metres.
