Habitat: understory; lowland and montane, tropical forest; altitude 80 to 3000 m.
Large shrub; 5 metres tall.
Stem: sparsely branching.
Leaves: large, 20 to 30 cm, more longer than broad; pronounced central vein, others radiating all along it; smell very strongly of anise.
Inflorescence: very long, reaching 30 cm or more.
Fruit: very long, reaching 30 cm or more.
