622.56.04 Peumus boldus
Names: Boldo fragrans, Peumus Boldus, Peumus fragrans, Boldea fragrans, Ruizia fragrans, Laurelia aromatica.
English: Laurel de Chile.

Botany: leaves, opposite, on short pistils, coraceous, about 5 cm long, broadly oval or oval-oblong, very obtuse at the apex, entire or somewhat undulate on the margin, with numerous glands upon their surfaces, rough on both sides, glossy above and pale and hairy beneath. When dry they are reddish-brown, fragrant and of a refreshing aromatic pungent taste. The bark is usually employed in tanning and to perfume wine casks; the wood is esteemed for charcoal making and the seeds are said to be eaten by the Chileans.
Content: boldine: aromatic stimulant, bitter, hypnotic, local anaesthetic; boldoglucin (C30H52O8), hypnotic and narcotic, excite the biliary function and provoke sleep burning in the stomach, vomiting, purging; Boldo and chiefly Boldoglucin, in moderate doses excite the biliary function and provoke sleep, at a very high dose Boldo becomes toxic, producing burning in the stomach, vomiting, purging.

Lungs: paralysis; dyspnoea; asthma, bronchitis, catarrh, oedema lungs.
Heart: pulse fast; cardiac failure; anaemia.
Stomach: pain, burning, glowing, heat, heavy, sensation of something hard, a tumour; atony, nausea, belching, purging, vomiting bilious of pus.
Abdomen: full, sore < eating; ascites; atony; ! liver burning pain, heaviness, > undressing, < pressure; burning weight, disturbed <<< malaria; congestion, colic, jaundice, atrophy, inflammation chronic, hypertrophy, abscess; gall colic; acute yellow atrophy, acute alcoholism; cholecystitis; biliary calculus.
Rectum: constipation; diarrhoea, dysentery.
Urinary: urine: strong smell, copious, colour of coffee, urea high; bladder atony; acute and chronic cystitis; gonorrhoea.
Limbs: rheumatics and antifebriles; weakness, paralysis, reflexes strong or weak; cramps, inco-ordination, convulsions; arthritis, rheumatism; dropsy, bloated; knee: right, fixed, cannot be bend.
Skin: cyanotic.
