Osmium metallicum
English: The element.
‘The crisis manager’
Osmium has long been known as a remedy, without a clear picture however. Shah (1995) has shown us a beautiful case recently.
Signature
The name Osmium is derived from the Greek word ‘osmos’, meaning ‘smell’, because of the nasty smell of osmium tetroxide. It was discovered in 1804 and its chemical formula is Os.
This metal is very hard and difficult to mould or shape. It is the heaviest metal in the periodic system and also the most resistant to pressure. Making use of its resistance to corrosion and its hardness it is often a component in fountain pens, clock bearings and in jewellry. Compass needles also contain Osmium because it is very magnetic. It is also used as a catalyst in the production of ammonia.
