NATRIUM IODATUM
Natrium iodatum: The right to exist
By Ed Brink
A 32 year-old-woman (born in 1954) consulted me on September 22 in 1986 with the following symptoms:
- Heartburn during the whole day becoming worse after eating in general and especially after coffee and spicy foods.
- A lot of stress about her sick child, business problems and cancer of the uterus.
- Abdominal cramping pains during the night waking her up at 4.00. Obstipation with hard and knotty stool.
- Sudden dizziness during a short period.
- Loss of weight. In the beginning she was losing weight on purpose. Later it went out of control.
At the time of the consultation she was eating a lot, had a hungry feeling, but she did not gain any
weight.
- In 1985 she had an exconisation of the uterus followed with radiation therapy.
Generals
She is a chilly person, but warmth makes her dizzy and gives her a headache. She had headaches in the occiput going to the left ear with pulsations, becoming worse with heat and stress. She has had some heart palpitations. Her menses was very irregular and heavy. Before the menses she becomes irritated and depressed. She also has painful breasts before the menses. Sleeping is difficult, falling asleep the greatest problem. She has fearful dreams. Her appetite is good. She likes sweets (3), salads with baked potatoes (3), salt (3), and she does not like meat (3) and fat (3). She is not thirsty. She told me that she was in psychoanalysis because of her depressions. The depressions recurred every autumn. She had attempted suicide with tablets. She called herself an optimist and a fighter. She was a worrier. She could become angry easily. She was very tidy, censorious and clean. She had fears of war, seeing war-movies and that something would happen to her son. She was hurried in her work. She liked to have company but could also be on her own. Emotions were not shown. Sexually she had pains during the coition. She was a lean person with big eyes, a suspicious expression and a lot of freckles. She used rohypnol. I gave her Arsenicum D 30, because of the suspiciousness, being lean, her fears, censoriousness and chilliness.
First Follow up
Date 20-0-986. In the beginning she had an aggravation of all the symptoms and later an amelioration. Her stool became better and her sleep ameliorated. The heart palpitations disappeared.
I decided to wait.
Then after a long time she came back on 2 December 1993 with the following complaints: For some time she stopped working. She said that she had experienced a lot. After her exconisation of the uterus she never returned to be her old self. She was very tired during the whole day. She had anemia. In her vagina she had a very painful spot diagnosed as a papilloma virus infection.
Second generation
She had a depression and said that she had been diagnosed having the syndrome of the second- generation of Jewish parents after the Second World War. She had many psychoanalytic sessions with a psychiatrist. She said: ' I have the feeling that I have worked out everything but still the feelings of panic and anxieties do not disappear.' She was very anxious and had the feeling that something bad would happen to her. She had strong panic-attacks, coming suddenly with trembling and nausea. The attacks relieved by sleeping but could go on for hours. She had a strong sensation of not being in the world. As if she was not in her body. She had a feeling of missing a reason for her existence. She felt very weak and had no urge to do anything. She wanted to die. She ate very badly and had a lot of abdominal pains, which became worse getting cold. In bed she was very cold in the beginning and later she became very warm. She slept very badly because of a lot of thoughts. She had no appetite. Her desires were: chocolate (3), chips (3), sweets (3), salt (3), vegetables (2) and fish (2). Her aversions were: meat (2), coffee (2), alcohol (2), fruit and sour. Alcohol made her sick. She had no thirst. She became easily cold and warm. She became restless during storms. She could not stand tight clothing around her abdomen. She had a car accident in 993. A daughter of friends died recently and she also lost a good friend. It was very difficult to weep for her. She had the feeling that she had to be strong.
Her family was reduced to only her parents and one grandfather and grandmother after the holocaust. She had one brother. Her parents were very protective. Her parents could not give any love to their children and often were not at home. She had two children with the syndrome of Gilles de la Tourette. She can give her children love easily.
She called herself a fighter and could care for others. She was very sensitive to words of others and liked to be seen as a nice person. She had a lot of grief. When she could weep she had the feeling that she could weep for at least 3 years. She felt the grief in her stomach. It was as if the grief was not digestible. Trifles could make her very angry. She was very violent. Her parents still treated her like a child, which made her angry. She had no lump feeling in the throat. She was very precise and tidy. She needed company to do something, but she did not ask for company. She had worked very hard as a secretary. Her father was a journalist, a strong personality with a sense of humour. Her mother was hard without any feeling and was presumptuous towards sick people.
When she tried to sleep she had a lot of thoughts about the past. Dreams: Trying to escape and hide herself. As a child she dreamed many times about going down winding stairs pursued by little men with big heads. She had a disgust of people, meat, meals and smells. Before the menses her breasts were tense and painful. She could be dizzy as if not standing on the floor. Sunlight could be too bright for her. She didn't like anything of herself.
I gave her Lac caninum 200K because of her fears, painful breasts before the menses, her low self- esteem, the dizziness and the aggression. For the panic attacks I gave her Aconitum 200K.
Follow up
Date 25-1-1994
After one week she got an inflammation of the left trigeminus with strong pains becoming worse with every movement and warmth. This took two weeks and disappeared. She had many dreams. One dream was about going back to the flat she had lived in with her parents. She had to live there again which she did not like at all. Another dream was of being operated and having six nails in the arm. She also had a dream about her son having a brain tumor. During 3 weeks she had a lot of headaches. Her tiredness and depression were the same. Her sleep was a little better. Her desire to die was unchanged. Her feeling of not existing was the same. To my understanding nothing had happened as the most important feelings were still the same.
Natrium Iodatum
I decided to give her another remedy Natrium iodatum 200K, because of the strong feeling of no existence, having no right to be here and the history of her Jewish family during the Second World War. Her problems with her appetite, her violent reactions, her strong fears pleaded for a iodium salt. Date 7-3-1994
She came back and said to me; I do not know what has happened to me but I have changed completely. She has much more energy. She became completely clear in her head. She could feel her emotions and they came out. She could weep about the Second World War now. This gave her relief. She let go of the feeling to be strong all the time. She started to have many unpleasant dreams. The feeling not to exist disappeared. Her desire for death diminished. Her fears melted away.
Analysis
The change she showed me after one month was astonishing. I seldom see such a radical change in my practice. Normally it will take more time to heal. To my understanding this was really the right remedy at the right time. The psychological part had been worked through and the only thing that had to happen was a remedy that could synchronise the psychic and the physical level.
This happened to be Natrium iodatum, which I could prescribe thanks to the book of Jan Scholten. In his book 'Homeopathy and Minerals' he tells about the feeling of having no existence in Natrium iodatum patients, as is felt in a concentration camp. Here the patient got this feeling from her family with a history of concentration camps. She also had the feeling of having no possibility to escape, which initiated extreme panic attacks. She was lean and had an increased appetite. In the complete repertory there are only 32 symptoms mentioned but none fit this case. She also called herself a fighter. This fits the idea of having to fight for your existence. Furthermore she had the feeling that something bad would happen to her. Her dreams were about being pursued and trying to escape.
