Taxonomy
Fabales is one of the Orders in Fabidae, part of the Nitrogen‑fixing clade. The Order of the Fabales in the Apg3 classification consists of Fabaceae, Polygalaceae, Suraniaceae and Quillajaceae.
Plant theory 1
In the Plant theory the Nitrogen‑fixing clade is in Phases 5 to 7. Fabales is in Phase 5. The Zygophyllales, containing the families Zygophyllaceae and Krameriaceae, has been included in Fabales.
In the first version of the Fabaceae has been split into its 3 subfamilies: Mimosoideae, Caesalpinioideae and Papilionoideae.
Plant theory 2
Suraniaceae, Quillajaceae got included in Polygalaceae and placed in Subphase 1.
Fabaceae has been split into its 5 subfamilies. Mimosoideae and Caesalpinioideae stayed the same but were replaced in Subphase 5 and Subphase 6 respectively. Papilionoideae, the biggest part of Fabaceae was split further in 3 Subfamilies Galegoideae, Phaseoloideae and Genistioideae and placed in Subphase 2, Subphase3 and Subphase 4 respectively.
