Botany: multicellular; superficially resemble land plants; stem-like and leaf-like structures; branching complex, derived from apical cells which cut off segments at the base to form nodal and internodal cells alternately, anchored to the littoral substrate by means of branching underground rhizoids; rough to the touch due to deposited calcium salts; unpleasant smell of hydrogen sulphide.
