The name comes from the Greek word ‘bromos’, which means ‘nasty smell’. it was discovered in 1826.
It is a brownish red, acrid and smoking fluid. Some methods of water purification, disinfection, bleaching and the production of tear gas make use of its corrosive properties. Silver bromide gets used in photographic processing. Other Bromium compounds are used to increase flame resistance in artificial materials. Bromides also get used in engines to reduce knocking.
Bromium is widely used in chemical processes because it easily interchangeable between different compounds.
