Essence: Confusion of identity with regard to his friends.
Confusion of identity with regard to his friends
They are inclined to go along with what their friends do and think. They want to belong to the group so they continually check whether they are acting the same way as their friends. Eventually they are not sure anymore who they are and what they want. This situation gets worse when others -brothers, sisters or friends- are putting pressure on them. They get utterly confused and start to feel lost in their own environment, as if they don’t know where they belong anymore.
Misled by friends
The tendency to adapt may become so extreme that they start to do things that they don’t agree with. They feel they are being misled by all the advice and the pressure that is being put upon them. Then they feel guilty about what they have done, but at the same time they are not sure who is to blame. Is it their fault or their brother’s or sister’s fault?
Misled through sympathy
They are extremely sympathetic, which makes them more prone to forget themselves and their own emotions and to please others. They suppress their own feelings if they get the slightest hint that others might get upset about them. This creates confusion within themselves because they don’t know how to proceed in life and which friends to choose.
Triangular relationships with brothers and sisters
They may end up in all sorts of strange relationships. They may be brought up in a family where the parents are in the habit of playing one child off against the other. Or they may be forced by one friend to do something that harms another friend.
Confusion whether his ideas are really his own
They get confused about their own ideas and what they have learned. Whose idea is it in the end? Or their parents may say to them that they are always copying their friends. They get very put off by this thought.
They start to slow down in their thinking because they are spending half the time wondering whether it is their own thought or somebody else's.
They can also get very confused when someone takes on one of their ideas and starts to work it out further. Whose idea was it to start with: was it their own?
Another form of confusion can be that they don’t know whether they are a boy or a girl. They adapt to a brother or sister or to a parent to the extent where they are not sure of their own sex anymore.
Bewildered by study and travelling
Sometimes things get too much at school. They get overwhelmed by all the information and can’t get it clear in their mind anymore.
The same thing may happen when they are travelling: they absorb so many new impressions that they are dazzled by them. Another possibility is that they get confused because they are homesick. They don’t know where they belong anymore. They have all these new impressions and at the same time there are the old contacts and friendships that they are missing.
