Homeopathy has a strange place in in our society. It is cherished and discarded; it is seen as empty and full of possibility. On the internet the two most disputed themes in general over the world are homeopathy and Christ. In this sense homeopathy is in good company.

Homeopathy has a lot to offer to medicine and society in general. It brings back the wonder, the wonder of life in a world where humans are seen and treated by doctors as soulless bodies, machines needing to be repaired. Homeopathy brings back the admiration for nature, for the self healing power in life. Homeopathy brings back into medicine the wonder of cure.
For those not acquainted with homeopathy this might sound strange, too lyrical. This contradiction is met by homeopathic doctors on a daily basis when they cure some "incurable" disease and then the regular doctor explains that the diagnosis was a mistake. The contradiction is told by patients who talk about their "miracle" homeopathic medicines.

One example may show the whole complexity and contradictory situation. The remedy Arnica montana is very well known for traumas, especially bruises. People who have seen the effect of Arnica in cases of trauma are often astonished how it can resolve a fresh extensive and painful bruise in short time. It really looks like a wonder. This effect of Arnica has been shown in the research of bruises from cosmetic surgery, all according to the fullest standards, "double blind". This quality of Arnica has been known from a long time as can be seen from its Dutch name "Valkruid", which means herb for falling. Arnica is one of the most used remedies, being part of home remedy kits, and successfully used by mothers all over the world for traumas of their children. The only places where Arnica is not used are the trauma centers of hospitals.

Laws of homeopathy

The theory of homeopathy can be characterised by three main laws

  1. Law of similars
  2. Ekdioky, often referred to as Hering's Laws of Cure
  3. Potentisation


Homeopathy leads to a view on disease and diagnosis which differs essentially from those in regular medicine. It gives a deeper view on the origin and cause of disease.


Homeopathy has developed a new classification of diseases, which is more in accordance with physics, botany and zoological classifications than with the classification in regular medicine. The Element Theory and the Plant Theory explain the classification, with themes of Series, Stages, Phases and Subphases.


Another difference with regular medicine is that homeopathy has a much more optimistic view on disease and health. Regular medicine often has a quite fatalistic attitude, seeing many diseases as incurable and telling patients they have to learn to live with their disease and that they have to use medications for the rest of their life. This is in contrast with the experience of "spontaneous healing", the experience that some patients heal spontaneously from "incurable" diseases.
In homeopathy one is open for any possibility. Diseases can come, so they go. With homeopathic treatment many "impossible" cures have taken place, many patients healed spontaneously. Some homeopaths call themselves "specialist in spontaneous healing".
In homeopathy there exists a peculiar state, that some patients heal miraculously and quickly, whereas other patients do not seem to react on any remedy. Often this does not depend on the severity of the disease. Sometimes a cancer heals easily whereas an eczema seems to be incurable. Although in general the more severe a disease, the less easily it gets cured. The fact that incurable diseases can heal makes the whole idea of incurable diseases questionable. This means that the homeopathic doctor can never tell before hand if someone can be healed. The disadvantage is that one is always in doubt. The advantage is that one is always open for cure.


There are two main objections against homeopathy:

  1. There is no evidence. | Though evidence for homeopathy abounds.
  2. There is nothing in it. | This second objection, that homeopathy lacks substance, is at the heart of the problem of our culture. Materialism has become the new religion and it reasons everything away that does not fit into matter. Materialism reasons away emotions, thoughts, freedom, consciousness and everything that is central to life and people.
